One of the many calamities caused by the recent U.S. Government tariffs on French wine was the near-total loss of product from the Left Bank available to U.S. consumers. Margaux, Pauillac, Saint Julien and Saint-Estèphe appellations include a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, which typically reaches no more than 13.5% to 14% alcohol levels when ripening. Merlot, on the other hand, the varietal most common on the Right Bank, can reach upwards of 16% percent or higher.

Since alcohol levels of 14% and under was the figure deemed taxable by the U.S. Trade Representative (at 25%!!) importers purchased many more Right Bank wines during the 18 months in which tariffs were imposed. Left Bank wines, not surprisingly, began to quickly disappear from U.S. inventories.

But now, they are back! We’ve restocked and are offering First Growths and Super Seconds, as well as a number of verticals. Verticals, of course, allow collectors to experience the progression of an estate and to understand various vintages in their specificity. Moreover, collections of a single estate are frequently more valuable per bottle, than a single bottle. Particularly appealing, is Château Mouton Rothschild because each vintage has a distinct label produced by renowned artists.

Wine critic Jane Anson, may have put it best: “‘Any vertical has its fair share of drama behind the scenes. Hail storms, frost, changes of ownership, wider economic events that impact sales. The opportunity to better understand ‘vintage variation’ is part of what makes a vertical tasting so interesting to many.”

So, enjoy these collections of grand wines, finally available to us once again.
